Standing water and ground saturation can be a major issue in residential areas. This can often be solved by installing a French drain. A French drain is a trench with perforated drain tile surrounded by gravel. There is usually a barrier, such as landscaping fabric, around the gravel to keep the pipe from becoming clogged. After this has been installed, the area is usually covered back over with soil and sod (or grass seed). The water will seep through the ground, into the gravel and perforated pipe, and be lead to a better place to drain.
Catch basins are used when there is significant water pooling in an area. This allows the water to quickly drain to drain tile connected to the catch basin. This may be used in addition to a French drain, or even solid pipe in some situations.
Water sitting around your foundation is also a common problem. This can cause water pressure on your basement walls, and even basement leaking. Usual causes of this are downspout conductor lines and drain tile problems. This is needed to get the water away from the house. Often, fixing these pipes or running new pipes can solve the problem.
